Friday Recap - This Week in Harness Racing April 12 to April 18

Below is what happened in harness racing this week, as reported on Harnesslink and from other places across the web.

From Harnesslink

  • Freehold to raise purses five percent, SBOANJ - US
Freehold Raceway has informed the Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association of New Jersey that it will increase purses by five percent, effective with the next condition sheet.
  • Gotta Go Cullen beats Changeover, Duane Ranger - NZ
Gotta Go Cullen has won the first 4-year-old match-race of the season against his arch-rival of last year, Changeover.
  • Ian Dobson’s generosity rewarded, Don Wright - NZ
He who gives generously to others often reaps his due reward. Ian Dobson must certainly be thinking along those lines as well after his great sire Christian Cullen was represented by three prestigious winners at Alexandra Park last Friday night.
  • Looking for Gold with a Beach Boy, Carol Hodes - US
Kelvin Harrison was enjoying a few days in Augusta, Georgia, last week, playing some golf and watching the world’s best players in the Masters. The New Zealand native would not be able to see which golfer would claim the green blazer in person, however.
  • Tony Pullicino disqualified for six months, Brad Bishop - AU
Harness Racing Victoria (HRV) stewards recently concluded an inquiry into an elevated TC02 level returned by the Tony Pullicino-trained Chipsamissing at Cranbourne on November 1, 2007.
  • Molly Darling Melbourne-bound in May, Matt Smith - NZ
One of the most-travelled horses in New Zealand harness racing looks set to clock up some more air-miles in the next two months, with Molly Darling being set for a Melbourne campaign following another useful workout at Alexandra Park today (April 15).
  • Pick your spots in multi-race exotic, Derick Giwner - Worldwide
Pick up a track program from 25 years ago and you will be hard pressed to find a wager more exotic than a trifecta. Back when harness racing was a major sport and fans filled the stands on a daily basis, the daily double was king. The early double pool was consistently one of the biggest pools at the track. Times have changed on the exotic wagering front.
  • Horses to Watch at the Meadowlands, Derick Giwner - US
This list is designed to provide horses who had tough trips, traffic trouble or looked impressive in their recent start. Always consider whether each horse is at a competitive level and if their price warrants a play before wagering in their next start.
