Friday Recap - This Week in Harness Racing March 29 to April 4

Below is what happened in harness racing this week, as reported on Harnesslink and from other places across the web.

From Harnesslink

  • Chief editor role open at Harnesslink, Harnesslink - NZ
Harnesslink is seeking a worldwide editor to drive the site into the stratosphere in 2008 as we continue to build on our growth over the last few years.
  • Horses to Watch at the Meadowlands, Derick Giwner - US
This list is designed to provide horses who had tough trips, traffic trouble or looked impressive in their recent start. Always consider whether each horse is at a competitive level and if their price warrants a play before wagering in their next start.
  • Harness racing needs fixing fast - Rowe, Scott Rowe - CA
The old saying that goes “If it is not broke, don’t fix it.”, unfortunately can’t be applied to the current state of standardbred horse racing. The Standardbred Canada website is running a banner ad showing that wagering on harness horses has declined 40% since 2002. With a bleeding problem like that the industry doesn’t need a band aid – it needs a tourniquet.
  • Putting the Hammer down on Vivid Photo, Carol Hodes - US
This is a racing spoiler. Vivid Photo, the Older Trotting Horse of the Year in 2007, is about to make his 2008 debut and he may not be totally ready. It is not that trainer-driver Roger Hammer has not tried but even a 20-length victory in a 1:55.4 qualifying mile may not be enough to face the more seasoned and battle-ready free for allers, the gravelly-voiced Pennsylvanian conceded.
  • Tintin In America ready for trip south, Matt Smith - NZ
A 2-Year-Old crop that is starting to look wide open as defections appear is pushing forward Tintin In America as a major player in the upcoming juvenile features in the South Island.
  • Two freakish performances at Addington, Don Wright - NZ
Media front men could have been excused for claiming they were privileged to see two freakish pacers win feature races at Addington tonight Friday 28 March. The word freak or any offshoot of it is seldom used and reserved for only special occasions.
  • Mark Purdon has dominated the Derby, Don Wright - NZ
Mark Purdon’s vice-like grip on the $200,000 2008 Christian Cullen New Zealand Derby (2600 metres) at Addington on Friday night is a continuation of the remarkable run of success he has enjoyed in the classic.
