New… and Old Blogs on our Network

I just wanted to throw up a quick reminder to everyone that this main page isn’t all there is to ‘this here Harness Racing Blog’.

Anyone can sign up (here) for free and start their own blog within minutes - no technical knowledge required.

On that note Aussie Jamie Varcoe has started a blog, Onward & Upward. He says:

I’ve been toying with the idea of starting up a Blog for quite a while now and I finally decided to take a shot.  My main areas of interest are Australian, USA & Canadian 2yo & 3yo Racing, their Sires & Maternal Families.

I make a point of watching as much US & CAN 2yo & 3yo Racing as I possibly can & focusing on the Colts in particular. I do this on the basis that it is almost inevitable that some of them will come our way as Sire prospects in the future. To that point I’ll be regularly updating this Blog with upcoming Feature Race dates, fields, free Links to watch the races Live via Streaming Video wherever possible.

It is my sincere hope is that Southern Hemisphere Breeders will take the opportunity to tune in, watch these races live and then make their own minds up rather than relying on the sometimes questionable or otherwise simply inaccurate sources that have been available to us in the past. It’s basically my Don Quixote like tilt at the Lack Of Reliable Information Windmill. Who knows? Maybe one day I’ll knock it down.

And if you’re a New Zealander or keen on NZ racing - check out the Harness Odds Blog from the NZ TAB Harness Racing Fixed Odds wagering Desk. It’s quite interesting to see how the betting takes place behind the scenes, for example on the 29th of August:

Race 6: ‘Be Artful’ opened $7.00 & closed $4.00

We will have to start to show Be Artful a bit more respect as this is the second week we have opened him up at well over tote closing price. He only won by a nose but that was enough to do some damage

to the ‘book’ as he was once again well backed in early trading. The late money came for Partywiththehotgirl (2nd opened $7.00 - $6.00). The favourite Charisteas (4th) was the best backed in multi trading and was an unlucky runner coming from the back in a race run with a quick last half so he will be kept safe again next time he starts.

Race 7: ‘Special Ops’ opened $6.00 & closed $8.00

We had a few calls telling us we had the first two favourites around the wrong way but we knew it was going to be easy to sell both runners and the only damage would come in multi betting. We took $3,000 bets on both London Legend and Ohoka Rebel and a few $1,000 wagers on them. London Legend did close as our only losing result but trading on the race was steady all day and it was never going to be a bad result in the single trading ‘book’. The winner took a few wagers but the two favourites did scare off most wanting to get involved heavily on the remainder of the field.

Race 8: ‘Domination’ opened $7.50 & closed $12

As expected the favourite Makarewa Sun (2nd) was all customers wanted to be on in multi trading and we thought the $1.60 opening price would keep the liability on this horse under control but that was far from what happened as the money just kept coming for him. He closed $1.40 with the ‘book’ and $1.50 the tote, on his run after an early break and a late storming run home for second we doubt we will be offering up opening odds of $1.60 next time he lines up. We closed the winner well over our opening price but it was hard to sell any other runner no matter what price we put up. No surprise that this result was a good one for the ‘book.
